In this book, we describe a general framework that can be used to allow a computer system to answer questions of this type. In principle, one could write a special-purpose computer program for every domain one encounters and every type of question that one may wish to answer. The resulting system, although possibly quite successful at its particular task, is often very brittle: If our application changes, significant changes may be required to the program.

Moreover, this general approach is quite limiting, in that it is hard to extract lessons from one successful solution and apply it to one which is very different. declarative We focus on a different approach, based on the concept of a declarative representation. In representation this approach, we construct, within the computer, a model of the system about which we would model like to reason. This model encodes our knowledge of how the system works in a computer readable form. This representation can be manipulated by various algorithms that can answer questions based on the model. For example, a model for medical diagnosis might represent our knowledge about different diseases and how they relate to a variety of symptoms and test results.
A reasoning algorithm can take this model, as well as observations relating to a particular patient, and answer questions relating to the patient’s diagnosis. The key property of a declarative representation is the separation of knowledge and reasoning. The representation has its own clear semantics, separate from the algorithms that one can apply to it.

Thus, we can develop a general suite of algorithms that apply any model within a broad class, whether in the domain of medical diagnosis or speech recognition. Conversely, we can improve our model for a specific application domain without having to modify our reasoning algorithms constantly.
Declarative representations, or model-based methods, are a fundamental component in many fields, and models come in many flavors. Our focus in this book is on models for complex systems that involve a significant amount of uncertainty. Uncertainty appears to be an inescapable aspect of most real-world applications. It is a consequence of several factors. We are often uncertain about the true state of the system because our observations about it are partial: only some aspects of the world are observed; for example, the patient’s true disease is often not directly observable, and his future prognosis is never observed. Our observations are also noisy even those aspects that are observed are often observed with some error. The true state of the world is rarely determined with certainty by our limited observations, as most relationships are simply not deterministic, at least relative to our ability to model them. For example, there are few (if any) diseases where we have a clear, universally true relationship between the disease and its symptoms, and even fewer such relationships between the disease and its prognosis.

Indeed, while it is not clear whether the universe (quantum mechanics aside) is deterministic when modeled at a sufficiently fine level of granularity, it is quite clear that it is not deterministic relative to our current understanding of it. After all, it’s not unusual for standard calculus courses to largely skip once-invaluable topics such as trig substitution. To be sure, there’s a cogent argument to be made that many of the integration techniques taught back in my college days are passé in the age of such resources as Wolfram Alpha. And indeed, I soon realized that the difficulties I was encountering had less to do with students’ integration abilities and more with their basic comprehension. So one year I wrote a handout for the first week of the semester, in the hope that learning a few standard techniques would help demystify integration. I was astounded by the overwhelmingly positive response. Moreover, despite the relatively quick pace, students became notably less intimidated by integrals common in upper-level physics and engineering.

Though they did not always master the techniques, most students began to develop a solid intuition for both the physics and mathematics involved — which was the goal, after all. This early handout evolved into Chapter 8, “Ten Integration Techniques and Tricks.” Encouraged by this modest success — and having identified other areas of similar weakness — I began to develop a set of notes on an array of topics. Although upper-level students have already seen most of this material in other courses, I’ve found that even if they can push the symbols around, their understanding is often wanting. And once again, the results were gratifying. These notes form the backbone of Part I of this book, which is intended as a review with an eye toward strengthening intuition.

I also used the text in the mid-1990s in several summer school classes on thermodynamics at CMU. Experience makes me aware that it is impossible to make it through the entire text in a one-semester course. In this edition, I have divided the book into three sections. I suggest that at least the first section (“Thermodynamic Principles”) and as much as possible of the second section (“Phase Equilibria”) be included in a one-semester undergraduate course. The third section (“Reactions and Transformations”) can make its way into other courses of the curriculum that deal with oxidation, energy, and phase transformations.

• Whenever applicable, the number of independent equations is compared to the number of unknown quantities before the governing equations are written.
• Review Problems appear at the end of chapters to encourage students to synthesize the individual topics they have been learning.

We have included several optional topics, which are marked with an asterisk (*). Due to time constraints, topics so indicated can be omitted without jeopardizing the presentation of the subject. An asterisk is also used to indicate problems that require advanced reasoning. Articles, sample problems, and problems associated with numerical methods are preceded by an icon representing a computer disk.

 

 

In this third edition

we have made a number of significant improvements based upon the feedback received from students and faculty who have used the previous editions. In addition, we have incorporated many of the suggestions provided by the reviewers of the second edition.
A number of articles have been reorganized, or rewritten, to make the topics easier for the student to understand. For example, our presentation of beam analysis in Chapter 6 has been completely rewritten and includes both revised sample problems and revised problems. Our discussion of beams now more clearly focuses upon the methods and terminology used in the engineering analysis and design of beams. Also, the topic of rolling resistance has been added to Chapter 7. Furthermore, our discussion of virtual displacements in Chapter 10 has been made more concise and therefore will be easier for the students to understand. New to this edition, sections entitled Review of Equations have been added at the end of each chapter as a convenience for students as they solve the problems.
